New County Down Gay Group: A new group for lesbian, gay and bisexual people has been launched in Bangor, County Down. Gay and Lesbian across Down (GLAD) aims to provide a range of events for gay people living in or visiting the county. Loving Annabelle a beautiful story of love between a teacher and a student that is told so beautifully that the viewer is instantly drawn in as the relationship develops. The leading actresses, Erin Kelly as Annabelle (the student) and Diane Gaidry as Simone (the catholic boarding school teacher) are excellent and believable, the ensemble cast likewise and the locations and the cinematography are beautiful. Katherine Brooks has done a wonderful job in writing and directing a thoroughly enjoyable but thought provoking movie. There is such depth to the story that you indeed forget that the subject matter is taboo and forbidden, it is simply a love story. An ensemble cast telling 10 stories with intertwining characters. One story is about a father and gay son who are briefly dating the same woman . Mamie Toll (Lisa Kudrow) is an abortion clinic counselor with a massage therapist lover, Javier (Bobby Cannavale), and a secret: when she was younger, she and her gay stepbrother, Charley Peppitone (an excellent Steve Coogan), had a child she gave up for adoption. One day, Nicky Kunitz (Jesse Bradford), a sleazy filmmaker, shows up and plans to blackmail her with information on her child's whereabouts so that he can film the reunion and use it to get into the AFI. Charley now runs his father's restaurant with his lover, Gil (David Sutcliffe), and suspects that their lesbian friends, Pam (Laura Dern) and Diane (Sarah Clarke), lied about using Gil's sperm to create a child so that they wouldn't have to share him with them. Jude (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has been kicked out of her cousin's house and is now living with the latent Otis (Jason Ritter), who lives with his widower father, Frank McKee (Tom Arnold), who has become infatuated with Jude. HellBent, the directorial debut of Texas-born art director Paul Etheredge-Ouzts, makes the rather unique claim of being the world's very first "gay slasher flick". It's also a pretty well-crafted and surprisingly intelligent little psycho-thriller, and one that manages to surpass its own gimmicky description while giving the adventurous genre fans something interesting to chew on - the hot guys also help! The plot is certainly nothing revolutionary: A group of fun-loving friends plans to spend one wild Halloween together -- despite that fact that a local lunatic has been slashing gay guys to ribbons while they make out in parked cars. That's pretty much it, plot-wise, but hey; it's not like Friday the 13th is a masterpiece of brilliant narrative structure, so off we go to the Halloween slash-fest. Those expecting some sort of pedestal standing tract on the equality of homosexuals will be pleased to note that HellBent does not preach or make speeches. It's just a nasty little hack-'em-up in which the victims simply happen to be horny gay guys instead of horny football jocks or busty cheerleader chicks. The actors are not only very hunky but they can also act, the kills are enjoyably and gruesomely nasty, and the subtext is clear and obvious enough as to avoid a feeling or button-pushing or outright pretense. It's not deep and it's not unique, but HellBent approaches an oft abused sub-genre with just enough originality and creativity to warrant praise. The Spell has found Alan Hollinghurst (The Line of Beauty - only #3.99 at Amazon) on the Guardian's Fiction Prize shortlist, and with good reason. His first two novels were mischievous, escapist things, toying with the delights of colonial buggery The Swimming Pool Library and underage Belgian boys The Folding Star. In The Spell he's come of age, finally engaging with the issues of relationships, monogamy and aging that preoccupy the work of his peers. Alex is an uptight 36-year-old Foreign Office man who suddenly falls for Danny, the 22- year-old son of his ex-lover's new lover (are you following this?) The infatuation with Danny is as much an infatuation with the ecstasy-fuelled nightlife to which Danny introduces him, and it's hardly a surprise when the relationship fizzles. But Alex is forced into confronting his desires and the novel ends leaving him unsure but at least taking stock and looking forward. The story veers wildly between an intoxicating London and a windswept, traditional Wessex, as if Hollinghurst can't yet reconcile true rural Englishness with the possibilities afforded by cosmopolitan queer London. But there's an honesty here that's welcome after the (admittedly arousing) archness of his earlier work, and a real sense of facing up to life's bigger questions.
